D2 Legitimacy and Narrative Fragmentation

Topic

The legitimacy gap and the fragmentation of the narrative space measure two dimensions of the same ideological field: the legitimacy gap measures the distance between the official narrative and the population's lived experience, while the fragmentation of the narrative space measures how many alternative narratives compete to fill that gap. The wider the legitimacy gap, the more room opens up for competing narratives to proliferate; thus, the fragmentation of the narrative space does not grow independently but responds directly to the widening of the legitimacy gap.

The legitimacy gap measures the distance between the official narrative and the population's lived experience. Its sustained growth erodes consensus, and its sudden crossing of a critical threshold—typically triggered by a revealing event, as previously established—precipitates a breakdown of legitimacy.

The fragmentation of the narrative space measures the effective number of competing narratives with significant audiences. Its increase, fueled by the aforementioned widening legitimacy gap, pushes the ideological regime toward polarization: the wider the legitimacy gap, the more competing narratives find an audience, and this proliferation is what drives the ideological regime toward polarization.

Together, these two indicators allow us to track the same ideological field from two angles: the legitimacy gap anticipates a breakdown of legitimacy when it suddenly crosses its critical threshold, and the fragmentation of the narrative space—fueled by that same gap—anticipates the direction in which the ideological regime is moving. These are two distinct trajectories stemming from a single cause within "Culture"—the theme directly driven by the worldview track.
