A2 Information panic

Topic

"Information panic" is a second anomaly within this same channel of social diffusion and contagion—distinct from the cascade of viral misinformation, even though it shares the same cascade and threshold dynamics. While the first anomaly relies on unverified content spreading faster than corrections can catch up, information panic can materialize even in response to a signal that no one is attempting to debunk; this is because the trigger for the collective overreaction is not the content's falsity, but rather its ambiguity.

The variable that triggers this anomaly is the ambiguity of the original signal combined with high network connectivity. An ambiguous signal circulating through a sparsely connected network has little chance of amplification before someone clarifies it; however, that same ambiguous signal in a highly connected network can spark a collective overreaction before the ambiguity is resolved—precisely because each node that reacts without waiting for clarification reinforces the reactions of the others.

Unlike the viral misinformation cascade—where the content spreading is unverified and turns out to be false or misleading—in information panic, the original signal may be true, false, or simply incomplete. What transforms ambiguity into panic is not the signal's content, but the speed at which high network connectivity translates that ambiguity into a widespread collective reaction, leaving no time for calm interpretation. A panic of this kind—fueled by the rapid spread of information—does not remain confined to the social network where it originates: an ambiguous signal regarding the health of a company, a bank, or a market is often the sort of event that can accelerate the abrupt price reversal characteristic of the "Property + Investment" bubble-and-crash cycle, or push the financial system's aggregate leverage toward the fragility threshold that triggers systemic illiquidity and contagion. In such instances, the collective overreaction described here is the underlying mechanism driving a reversal that, when viewed solely through the lens of "Property + Investment," appeared to be purely financial in nature.
