M2 Execution regime: manual vs algorithmic

Topic

The execution regime describes who carries out transactions within the Property + Investment track: whether trading volume remains largely in the hands of human agents who make decisions and execute trades manually, or whether it is dominated by high-frequency algorithmic trading with diminishing direct human intervention. The variable triggering the shift from one regime to the other is the share of trading volume executed by high-frequency algorithms without direct human intervention—specifically, the point at which such algorithmic execution comes to dominate short-term price formation. This crossover point is precisely the specific effect that the cross-cutting Automation/AI modifier has on this track: an execution regime characterized by low direct human intervention.

This regime does not replace previously described market regimes—such as bull or bear markets, or states of high/low volatility or liquidity—but rather overlays them. A market can transition between bullish and bearish states under either manual or high-frequency algorithmic execution; indeed, the execution regime determines the speed at which the price-to-fundamentals relationship and volatility react to changes in the track's conditions.

When algorithmic execution dominates short-term price formation, volatility and the liquidity metrics tracked by this stream’s diagnostic tools can shift at speeds beyond the reach of direct human intervention. A drop in liquidity that might take hours or days under a manual regime can, in a market dominated by algorithmic execution, approach the fragility threshold that triggers systemic illiquidity and contagion in a fraction of that time; this occurs because the very algorithms responsible for the bulk of trading volume can withdraw from the network of agents almost simultaneously in response to the same signal.
