D1 Stellar Seismology
Topic
The central element of this model is the sound wave resonating within the Sun itself.
Standard solar models—constructed entirely from the four equations of stellar structure—predict a specific profile of how the speed of that sound wave varies with depth inside the Sun.
Helioseismology measures this same profile directly by tracking the minute oscillations appearing on the solar surface—oscillations caused by the sound waves themselves as they resonate throughout the Sun's interior.
The fact that these two approaches—the theoretical prediction of solar models and the direct measurement provided by helioseismology—align with such precision constitutes one of the most robust validations available today for the entire theory of stellar structure and evolution; conversely, any persistent discrepancy between the two would signal a genuine gap in the underlying physics, rather than a mere measurement error. Thus, from the sound wave resonating within the Sun—with which this document begins—to the validation of stellar theory—with which it concludes—and encompassing both standard solar models and the helioseismology that tests their predictions, stellar seismology reveals a star's invisible interior through the very sound the star produces, even though no one can hear it directly.
