M4 Annealing
Topic
Annealing this glass involves a sustained heat treatment—maintained at a constant temperature for a specific duration—aimed at relieving the residual stress accumulated during cooling or subsequent processing. Sustaining this heat treatment for a sufficient period, rather than applying it only momentarily, enables the desired relief of residual stress, whereas a brief application would leave that stress virtually unchanged.
This sustained heat treatment is carried out specifically at the annealing temperature—one of the standard viscosity points for this glass defined elsewhere in this set of models. Maintaining the glass at this annealing temperature allows structural relaxation—described by another model in the set—to occur at a significant rate within a practical timeframe. If the maintained temperature is close to the annealing temperature rather than far below it, structural relaxation proceeds at a significant rate; conversely, if the temperature is kept well below the annealing temperature, that same structural relaxation proceeds too slowly to be practical.
It is this structural relaxation, sustained at the annealing temperature, that causes the decay of the residual stress frozen within the glass. As the glass's non-equilibrium structure relaxes toward its equilibrium configuration at that temperature, the frozen-in residual stress decays over time, following approximately the same non-exponential pattern described by another model in this set for structural relaxation. The further this structural relaxation progresses, the more the residual stress decays, moving progressively closer to a state of virtually zero residual stress. Consequently, in this model—given the initial annealing conditions and residual stress—the rate at which that residual stress decays during the sustained heat treatment determines the required annealing duration: the greater the residual stress to be relieved, and the slower its decay at the sustained annealing temperature, the longer the time needed to reduce it to an acceptable level. Because this model relies on both the annealing temperature and the relaxation time—parameters already established by the other two models in the set—the annealing process for this glass is not arbitrary but is instead calculated directly from those two factors.
