D1 Stage diagnosis and signs of productive transition
Topic
The "stage diagnosis and productive transition signals" framework measures the relative share of each surplus source—land rent, industrial surplus value, credential rent, and automated surplus—within total income, alongside the rate of technological adoption at which these sources gain or lose weight. As long as the relative shares of these four sources remain within typical ranges, the framework records normal fluctuations without a change in the dominant source of surplus.
The framework issues a transition signal when a shift in the dominant surplus source ceases to be merely temporary: it is not enough for land rent, industrial surplus value, credential rent, or automated surplus to gain share for a time; the change must be sustained and irreversible over generations for the framework to register it as a valid signal.
This is precisely the same criterion—a discontinuous shift in the dominant surplus source that is sustained over generations—established as the trigger for a resource regime transition. Consequently, this framework serves as a direct measure of that transition: tracking the relative shares of land rent, industrial surplus value, credential rent, and automated surplus within total income, combined with the rate of technological adoption, allows us to recognize that the resource regime track has shifted stages, rather than waiting to confirm this generations after the transition has already occurred. Timely recognition is particularly important because a shift in the resource regime track fully drags along the Economy and Cliodynamics components, while only partially affecting the Population component.
