M3 Polarity Structures
Topic
Polarity structures—one of the three themes within geopolitics that the "political authority" track carries along when shifting phases—represent the three possible arrangements of the international system: unipolarity, bipolarity, and multipolarity. As long as the effective number of comparable poles remains constant, the prevailing polarity structure does not change, regardless of how other conditions within the international system may vary.
The effective number of comparable poles is the variable that triggers the transition from one polarity structure to another; changes in this figure shift the international system between unipolarity, bipolarity, and multipolarity. When the effective number of comparable poles drops to one, the polarity structure becomes unipolar; when it rises to two, it becomes bipolar; and when it rises to three or more, it becomes multipolar.
This is precisely the variable that the effective number of comparable poles measures directly as a diagnostic indicator; consequently, tracking this figure makes it possible to anticipate the polarity structure toward which the international system is moving before the realignment among unipolarity, bipolarity, and multipolarity has fully consolidated.
