A1 Viral misinformation cascade

Topic

Psychophysics is the third module of the Kyon Model—alongside Sociophysics and Econophysics—and focuses exclusively on the group or collective level: the emergent mechanics that cannot be reduced to the mere sum of individual psychologies. Its first track, social diffusion and contagion, describes how ideas, rumors, behaviors, or panics spread through a social network; this involves cascade and threshold physics rather than the physics of a crowd gathered in a single physical location.

The viral misinformation cascade is the anomaly describing what happens when this spread spirals out of control: unverified content disseminates across the social network faster than corrections or fact-checks can catch up to it. The variable triggering this anomaly is precisely the speed at which unverified content spreads, outpacing the speed of correction and verification. When corrections keep pace with or outstrip unverified content, the social network absorbs rumors and misinformation without allowing them to accumulate; however, when the spread consistently outpaces correction, unverified content takes hold in the network before there is any real opportunity to debunk it.

This track largely constitutes the mechanism underlying trigger variables that were only informally noted in the other two Kyon Model modules, pending the development of Psychophysics. For instance, the module on Econophysics—which addressed the saturation of low-quality information and knowledge—had already observed that the degradation of algorithmically generated signal reliability was linked to this same track of social diffusion and contagion. The cascade of viral misinformation is now the concrete mechanism to which that coupling pointed: when the proportion of AI-generated content lacking human verification grows within the realm of information and knowledge, that very unverified content becomes the material that can spread along this channel faster than verification can correct it.
