E1 Elements - diversity of information/perspectives
Topic
The elements of this track are the diversity of information and perspectives within the decision-making group, the independence of individual judgments prior to aggregation, and the aggregation mechanism the group employs to reach a decision—whether by vote, consensus, or hierarchy. None of these elements stands in isolation; they depend on inputs delivered by other tracks and modules through specific entry points.
This track receives "group cohesion" from Track 2 of this same module (Polarization and Group Identity) and "hierarchical pressure" from the Sociophysics module (Political Authority). The very group cohesion that, in that other track, characterizes intense group identification is what, here, reduces pre-decision diversity of opinion: a group whose internal identity has been reinforced through affective polarization or a closed echo chamber arrives at the decision-making table with individual judgments that are already less independent of one another—even before deliberation begins. Furthermore, hierarchical pressure within an authority structure can further reduce the rate of expressed dissent, particularly if voicing disagreement upward in the hierarchy entails a different cost than doing so among peers.
In turn, this track feeds the quality of institutional decisions into the "power anomalies" component of Sociophysics and into the investment decisions made by the committees in Track 5 of Econophysics (Ownership + Investment). Decision quality degraded by groupthink, analysis paralysis, or committee-based information cascades does not remain confined to this track; when the decision-making group is a body of power, that degraded quality translates into the very power anomalies already described by Sociophysics. And when the decision-making group is an investment committee, that same degraded quality is precisely what can drive the process—on the decision side rather than the price side—toward a bubble and crash, or toward the corporate capture described in *Property + Investment*.
The elements of this track thus form the foundation for the pre-decision diversity of opinion, the rate of expressed dissent, and the retrospective decision quality already measured by this track’s diagnostic: any change in the inputs regarding group cohesion or hierarchical pressure is ultimately reflected in one of those three indicators, while any change in the aggregation mechanism, in turn, alters the quality of the institutional decisions that this track feeds into Sociophysics and Econophysics.
