A4 Saturation of low-quality algorithmically generated content
Topic
The near-zero marginal reproduction cost defining the Information/Knowledge domain not only lowers the cost of scaling a dominant platform or a substitute technology but also reduces the cost of generating content—to the point where producing an additional unit of information costs virtually nothing. That same property, which during the tech bubble and the era of extreme platform monopolies worked to the advantage of those scaling up, presents a different kind of risk when the content being scaled at zero cost is generated algorithmically without human verification: the volume of information can grow without limit, while its reliability does not.
Within the Information/Knowledge domain, the saturation of low-quality content marks the point where Automation/AI ceases to be merely a modifier deciding what to produce and begins to degrade the quality of the output itself. The variable triggering this anomaly is the proportion of AI-generated content (lacking human verification); once this proportion crosses a specific threshold, the overall reliability of the signal degrades. Below that threshold, algorithmically generated content coexists with the rest of the stream's output without compromising collective reliability; once the threshold is crossed, the unverified signal becomes dominant, and overall reliability degrades for the entire stream—not just for the algorithmically generated portion.
This anomaly extends beyond the Information/Knowledge domain: the degradation of signal reliability is—according to the stream's own preliminary sketch—the same type of variable that fuels the diffusion and social contagion characteristic of "Stream 1" (Psychophysics). This represents a linkage that is currently noted only informally, pending the full development of the Psychophysics stream, complete with its own "E-block" and formal ports. As this unfolds, the saturation of low-quality content serves as the entry point for information and knowledge into that dissemination dynamic, just as the service access gap is—likewise informally—coupled with Lane 6.
